The All Blacks Sold a Slice of the Jersey to Silicon Valley

Short answer: mostly New Zealand Rugby — but a minority now belongs to US private equity. Silver Lake put ~NZ$200m into the All Blacks' commercial arm, valuing it near $2.4bn. The benchmark case for selling a national brand.

The All Blacks — the most valuable brand in rugby — sold a piece of themselves to Silicon Valley. In 2022, New Zealand Rugby brought in US private-equity firm Silver Lake as an investor in a new company housing its commercial rights, including the All Blacks. Silver Lake invested around NZ$200m for a minority stake of roughly 5.7–8.6% in NZR's commercial arm 1, in a deal that valued the business near $2.4bn 2.

It is the benchmark case for what happens when a national sports brand sells equity: cash and commercial firepower now, in exchange for a permanent slice of the upside flowing offshore. The All Blacks are the world's most valuable rugby brand, worth about $282m 3 — and a minority of that now belongs to California.

It is close to the deal South Africa's unions rejected for the Springboks. Two national teams, two answers to the same ownership question — the full comparison in Who Owns the Springbok?.
