2026 · INAUGURAL COHORT
The Ownership 100
The definitive ranked ledger of who owns Africa's most valuable brands — the phone in your hand, the channel on your screen, the drink in your glass. Ranked by continental reach and value at stake; every entry links to its sourced file. The inaugural cohort maps the brands the desk has investigated; we are building it out to a full 100.

BUILDING TO 100
Nominate a brand for the ledger.
The cohort grows every edition. Tell us which African brand’s ownership we should decode next — and get the ledger, and each new entry, in your inbox.
THE WEEKLY SIGNAL
Brand, culture and commercial intelligence for Africa and its diaspora.
Useful insight. Verified sourcing. No noise.
● AI-assisted discovery. Human-directed intelligence. Verified sourcing.
METHODOLOGY
Each entry is drawn from a published Who's Buying Africa file (linked), a deal in the ownership tracker, or named public-record reporting — a ledger row is never an unsourced assertion. 'Retained' means African-owned; 'Exported' means the controlling equity now sits offshore; 'Contested' marks a brand where ownership is live, mixed, or being brought home. Ranking is by continental reach, value at stake and cultural centrality, assessed by the desk; it is a considered editorial ordering, not a market-cap table. Authorship is treated separately from ownership on purpose: many of the highest-ranked brands are African-authored and foreign-owned — that gap is the story the ledger exists to make legible. The cohort grows each edition toward a full 100; brief-pending entries carry their source and are upgraded to a full file over time.
