Who Owns MultiChoice and DStv?

Short answer: Canal+ of France. The €-backed media giant completed a ~$3bn takeover of MultiChoice (DStv's parent) in 2025 and delisted it from the JSE.

MultiChoice — the South African broadcaster behind DStv — is now owned by Canal+, the French media giant. Canal+ completed its takeover in September 2025, reaching a 94.39% stake in a deal valuing MultiChoice at about US$3 billion 1, and MultiChoice was delisted from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in late 2025 2.

It was a 20-month campaign: Canal+ built its stake steadily, then cleared the regulatory hurdles to take full control 2. The combined group now serves tens of millions of subscribers across dozens of countries 1.

So the platform that carries African football, Nollywood and the continent's biggest pay-TV audience answers to Paris. It is one of the largest media ownership shifts in African history — African-built distribution, French-owned. Logged in Who's Buying Africa.
