The Loeries 2026: What the Winning Work Actually Says

Four Grand Prix, one dominant agency and a multinational Brand of the Year. The 2026 Loeries are a verdict on South African creativity — and, read closely, a map of where the value lands.

Every October, South Africa's advertising industry hands itself a verdict on its own year. The 2026 Loeries — staged across Creative Week, with the gala nights at Cape Town's City Hall from 8 October — did it again, and four awards mattered more than the hundreds of others 12.

The Grand Prix is the Loeries' only unambiguous signal. Everything else is a gradient of gold, silver and bronze; a Grand Prix says this was the single best thing anyone made in its discipline this year. Four pieces cleared that bar. Read together, they say something about where South African creativity is pointing — and they raise the question this desk always asks underneath the trophies: who actually owns the value the work creates?

The four that cleared the bar

"Period Paper" took the Grand Prix in Print, for Joe Public and Independent Media. It turned a newspaper — a declining medium — into a confronting statement on period poverty, and picked up a Craft Gold alongside the top award 15. It is the kind of idea the Loeries reward most reliably: a social cause, executed with craft, carried by a legacy media owner.

"Bar de Change" won the Grand Prix in Live Communication (Live Events) for LePub Johannesburg and Heineken Beverages — a pop-up bar that priced its drinks to the buying power of the South African rand abroad, making an abstract currency story physical 24. The diaspora, and the rand's weakness against the currencies South Africans travel and earn in, is quietly the brief.

"African Time" took Film Crafts (Direction) for Darling Films, working on a spot for South African Breweries (AB InBev) 24. A craft Grand Prix is a director's award as much as an agency's — a reminder that the production houses are part of the value chain the trophy tables rarely foreground.

"Spinning Thing" won the Grand Prix in Audio & Radio for Joe Public and Sunlight (a Unilever brand) — the proof that radio, the oldest format in the room, still produces the year's best ideas when someone bothers to write for the ear 24.

The house that won the week

One agency dominated. Joe Public took both Independent Agency of the Year and Agency of the Year, with roughly 30 Loeries including two of the four Grand Prix — the largest haul of any agency, ahead of TBWA\Hunt Lascaris on 20 3. The agency said it was the sixth time it had reached the top of the awards 2. In an industry where the biggest shops are almost all owned by global holding companies, an independent carrying the night is the headline most worth sitting with.

The other top honours point the other way. Heineken Beverages was named Brand of the Year 3. Publicis Groupe took Regional Agency Group of the Year 3. And Reg Lascaris — one of the founders of the agency that became TBWA\Hunt Lascaris — was inducted into the Hall of Fame 2. The present belongs to an independent; the structural weight still sits with the networks and the multinationals.

What the work is actually saying

There are two honest readings of this year, and the interesting thing is that both are true at once.

The first is a story of confidence. The work is locally authored, technically excellent, and unafraid of hard subjects — period poverty, a weakening currency, the texture of South African life. An independent agency can beat the networks at their own game. By the standard the Loeries set for themselves — is the work any good? — 2026 is a strong year.

The second is a value-capture reading, and it is less comfortable. Look at the brands behind the Grand Prix: Heineken-owned, AB InBev-owned, Unilever-owned. The strongest independent in the room, Joe Public, is the exception that reveals how rare scaled South African-owned creative capital has become. An award celebrates the idea. It says nothing about where the margin on the idea lands — which brand's sales lift, which holding company bills the retainer, which balance sheet carries the reputation the metal creates.

Neither reading cancels the other. A brilliant year for South African craft and a thin year for South African ownership of that craft can be the same year. That tension is not a flaw in the Loeries; it is the economy the Loeries sit inside.

A note on the numbers: we have kept to the figures the official results tables and the trade press reported — Joe Public's 30, the four Grand Prix, the agency and brand titles 23. Totals for the full week's statue count varied across outlets, and we have not independently reconciled them.

So the real test of a Loeries year isn't the metal handed out on the night. It's whether the value the work creates — the reputations, the effectiveness, the careers, the retained clients — compounds where the work was made. That answer doesn't arrive at a gala. It shows up on the cap tables, slowly, over the years that follow.
