Who Owns Flutterwave?

Short answer: no one bought it. Flutterwave is the rare African fintech at scale that's still founder-led and independent — the counter-example to the export pattern.

Unlike Paystack or OPay, Flutterwave has not been acquired — it remains a private, African-founded company with no single corporate owner.

It was co-founded in 2016 by Olugbenga "GB" Agboola and Iyinoluwa Aboyeji 1, and is headquartered across San Francisco and Lagos. It is venture-backed rather than owned outright by any one investor, and its long-planned IPO is tied to the company first turning a profit 2.

That independence makes Flutterwave the counter-example in African fintech. It is not being bought — it is doing the buying, most notably acquiring the open-banking firm Mono to keep African rails in African hands, as we set out in Flutterwave Is Buying a Bank and log in Who's Buying Africa.
