Indomie is one of Nigeria's most beloved everyday brands — and it is not Nigerian-owned.
In Nigeria, Indomie is manufactured by Dufil Prima Foods, originally a joint venture between Singapore's Tolaram Group and Indonesia's Salim Group 1. The Indomie brand and trademark themselves are owned globally by Indonesia's Indofood, part of the Salim Group 1. And in 2018, Kellogg's of the United States took a stake in Tolaram's African foods business 2.
So the ownership map runs Singapore, Indonesia and, increasingly, the US — even as the product became so woven into Nigerian kitchens that many assume it was invented there. It is the definitive case of a foreign brand a country adopts as its own, and a reminder that cultural ownership and corporate ownership are two different things.
